First Impression

The SilverRiver was larger than I expected, but I guess for a 5.25” drive, it has to be that large. The first thing I noticed about the enclosure is how sturdy it is. The aluminum construction gives it both a shiny professional look while making the enclosure solid enough to offer protection to the drive you decide to put into it.

The back of the SilverRiver has the standard USB2.0 output, the power connector, as well as the power switch. There are also RCA audio jacks for your CD/DVD drives, which is a nice add on. Finally, the incorporation of a cooling solution to the unit is a very nice feature, as with most high performance drives, they do get extremely hot while in use.

I decided to mount a hard drive in the SilverRiver for testing purposes. Installation was simple. One thing to note, make sure you set your hard drive to master or else the drive will not detect. Some enclosures don’t seem to care, such as the Vantec 350U2, but the SilverRiver seems to mind.

As with most USB2.0 drives and Windows XP, it was plug and play. However, the detection time of the SilverRiver seems to take a little longer as compared to other external enclosures.
